SHE wants the real thing
So I'm totally obsessed with this Medium Thick and Chunky Salsa. However, my stash was running low.
After hopping into my car, I started the directions to the nearest Whole Foods. The journey was seemingly a pretty easy one. Turn right, and then stay straight for a little over a mile, and then turn left into Whole Foods. The path was so easy, that I felt confident enough to switch my phone screen to my favorite music playlist and started a pretty epic local concert in my car.
Over one mile later, I turned my left signal on, and cruised right into a parking spot. This wasn't Target so I knew that I could easily go in for my one desired object and be in and out in 5 minutes or less. After walking around for more than 5 minutes, I was getting disheartened that I couldn't find my salsa. I had made it to the salsa aisle, but I could not find my dear salsa. Something told me to look up, which I did. Only to read 'Sprouts'.
Sprouts? How did I get here? Wait. Where am I supposed to be again? Whole Foods Elizabeth. Whole Foods.
Thankfully no one knew why I raced out of the store empty-handed.
“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” -Hebrews 12:1-2
In life how many times do we set out for something. We know what we want and what we should do, but we can easily get deterred by things that look similar to it. We'll spend so much time at the wrong place looking for something that can never offer us what we really want.
Christ is want we want, but many things of this world can offer themselves as poor substitutes. That relationship you've come to idolized. Your lucrative job that you spend more time at than in ministry or community.
It wasn't until I literally looked up and say the store sign that I realized that I was in the wrong place.
I was so distracted that I had completely missed my destination. What I was searching for seemed so similar to where I was that it took me a while to even notice that I was in the wrong place.
Whatever empty thing you are chasing to fill the void that only Jesus can fill can be left behind today.
What substitutes are holding your attention?
