Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.
Not sure what naive individual came up with that popular phrase, but that didn’t give me peace when I was little, and it definitely doesn’t work in the adult world.
Words mean a lot.
Words can start a war. Words can mend broken relationships.
Words can ruin our entire day. Words can single-handedly make our day the best day of our lives.
Words are important. That’s why God created them. In the first Chapter in Genesis, He literally SPOKE things into existence…
And God said, “Let there be light.” (v.3)
“Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water
from water. “ (v.6)
“Let the land produce vegetation.” (v. 11)
“Let us make mankind in our image.” (v. 26)
….and so on until the Earth was complete.
For 1,188 more chapters, God inspired authors like Moses and Paul to account for events in history as well as for promises He made to His children that still applies to us today.
“so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
I know this verse. I love this verse. But I sometimes find it hard to trust this verse, especially when I’ve made a whole other vision board with the same requests year after year.
There’s a big difference between believing IN God and believing God.
Like the song goes, “Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him...how I’ve proved him o’er and o’er.” That is a fact and testament in my life. I know my Father is real because I’ve seen His fingerprints all over my life. But when things don’t seem to be working out, it’s hard to see the promise in my disappointment.
Believing IN God and Believing God are two completely different things. But if we can accept the fact that God is who He says He is, then we also have to hold on to the same understanding that He will do what He says He has already done. Don’t miss the use of past tense there. Anything that He has promised He will do is done already. So sticks and stones may break my bones, but His words can NEVER hurt me.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
