when SHE doesn't get a text back

Texting is an art form. It has its own etiquette and social norms that must be followed to be a socially-acceptable communicator in the 21st century:

Ask open-ended questions.

If you want to end a conversation, reply with one word...k.

Add ‘lol’ to the end of passive aggressive or ambiguous statements

Any text after 9 or 10PM should be interpreted with caution.

Text back within 5 minutes or less.

I’m known to violate the last one more often than not. Not on purpose, I just struggle with multi-tasking and texting. I literally have to stop walking to write and send a text. For those that are experts in the text back game, someone like myself probably causes you frustration as you wait one hour to to receive a simple one sentence reply, usually beginning with the phrase “Sorry for the late reply.” On behalf of late-repliers like myself...sorry for the late apology.

Sometimes it feels like God takes forever to text back. Not just minutes, but sometimes years. There are things that I have asked or cried out to Him for without a reply for over 3 years. Anxious and frustrated that I haven’t received a reply, I send text after text begging for a response. Silence.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

-Philippians 4:6-7

This is when I can go into panic mode and start consulting every breathing human being on the issue. ‘What do you think about….” “Should I…” “What would you do if you were in my situation…” In the end I feel more burdened and confused than when I first began, because not one of my friends has the answer, because not one of them is God.

"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

-James 1:5

God wants us to consult Him first in everything! From there we can ask to receive guidance and confirmation on what He has already told us in the quiet moments we share with Him. I challenged myself for the first time ever to go to God first about a situation without consulting anyone until I received an answer. Talk about self-control. Every conversation I battled the thoughts of:

“Maybe I should just get a quick opinion.”

“They know me AND Jesus so I’m sure they’re both gonna say the same thing, right.”

However, the amazing thing I learned was that when I funneled all the questions I would have typically posed to my friends, I instead asked them directly to God. In the beauty of who He is, He was faithful to answer them all. Because I received a text back unadulterated by the opinions and thoughts of others, I found a new level of peace and comfort in seeking and waiting on God’s voice.

Thankfully God is not human, so He’s not subject to being distracted by multi-tasking. When we don’t receive an answer immediately, don’t think He doesn’t already have an answer for you. Instead He wants us to put down our phone and just spend time with him alone, and before you know it, He’ll be the one to tell you to check your phone...because He just replied back.

What are you asking God to answer?

Who are you consulting first before asking God?
